A diner on North Street in Lathrop. Breakfast is cooked to order all day, the tenderloins are hand-breaded here, and the pie is whatever got made this morning. Seven days a week.

123 Main St, Lathrop, MO Breakfast from 6:00 a.m. (816) 555-0187

What we cook

Nothing here comes off a truck ready to serve.

The pork is pounded and breaded in the back, the potatoes get cut in the morning, and the pies are made one at a time. Which is why there are days the coconut cream is gone by one o'clock and we are not sorry about it.

PLACEHOLDER: a hand-breaded pork tenderloin sandwich hanging well over the edges of the bun, pickles and onion on the side, basket of fries beside it

The tenderloin

Pounded thin, breaded to order, and bigger than the bun by a good two inches. Served with pickle and onion, and it is the thing most people drive out here for.

PLACEHOLDER: a full breakfast plate overhead, two eggs over easy, hash browns, sausage patties and biscuits under sausage gravy

Breakfast, all day

Eggs any way, hash browns off the flat top, biscuits and gravy, and pancakes bigger than the plate. The grill is on at six and it does not go cold at ten thirty.

PLACEHOLDER: a tall stack of thick hand-battered onion rings in a red plastic basket lined with paper

Onion rings

Cut thick, battered by hand, and stacked. Order them for the table because they do not survive one person.

PLACEHOLDER: a slice of meringue pie on a small plate with a fork, whole pies visible in the glass case behind

Pie

Coconut cream, chocolate, and whatever fruit is around. Made in the morning, sold until it is gone, and the case tells you what is left.

PLACEHOLDER: the daily plate lunch, roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, and a dinner roll on a heavy white plate

The daily plate

One meat, two sides and a roll, different every day of the week. Roast beef on Monday, chicken and noodles on Wednesday, catfish on Friday night. Call and we will tell you what today is.

PLACEHOLDER: a smashed double cheeseburger on a griddle-toasted bun, cheese over the edges, on a paper-lined plate

Burgers

Fresh patties smashed on the flat top, single or double, cheese and everything on it unless you say otherwise.

PLACEHOLDER: the cook at the flat top in the middle of a breakfast rush, spatula in hand, tickets clipped on the rail above

The diner

Same corner, same booths, same six o'clock.

The farm crowd comes in first and the school crowd comes in second, and by seven the middle booth has been claimed by the same four men it has been claimed by for years. If you sit there they will make room for you and then they will ask where you are from.

We are a diner in a town of a couple thousand people, so we know most of the tickets before they are ordered. If you have not been in, come hungry and take a menu, and we will get you fed and back on 33 in good time.
